We have an exciting announcement! Birkemeier Farms has Red Dragon (corylus avellana contorta) contorted filbert trees FOR SALE!
One of the newest ornamental releases out of Oregon State University’s hazelnut breeding program, this red contorted filbert tree is a cut above Red Majestic. Most importantly, (and to get the practicals out of the way) this contorted filbert cultivar carries the Gasaway gene of resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight. This airborne fungal infection has been the bane of commercial and residential hazelnut lovers for decades. It kills filbert trees slowly and methodically. Birkemeier Farms only sells hazelnut trees released by Oregon State University Breeding Progam with EFB resistant genes and Red Dragon is the first contorted filbert tree with the EFB resistant Gasaway gene.
Let the buyer beware: Red Dragon contorted filbert trees that are currently available through many nurseries may be grafted using regular filbert root stocks. These grafted root-stocks will throw straight, green suckers for the life of the plant, requiring continuous pruning to maintain the unique color and character of the original plant.
At Birkemeier Farms, we currently sell both grafted and self-rooted Red Dragon. Next year all our plants will be on their own root, resulting in a truly red contorted filbert.
